FAQ - Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are most of the pictures in black and white?

A: Northwest Journal was originally a black and white paper production. However, this can be seen as an advantage because the pictures have been optimized for printing on black & white laser printers and subsequent photocopying reproduction.  (See "Can I Copy This Article?")

Q: Why do I sometimes get an "error 404" or "missing page" error when I'm trying to see the website?

When new articles are added new copies of some pages must be downloaded to the web server. While this is happening, those pages will be "missing" to any browser trying to access the site. If the "northwestjournal.ca" page is being changed, then the entire site will be missing! If this happens, just try again later.

Q: Will my hyperlinks to specific articles ever have to change?

We have taken great pains to ensure that external links are not broken - we will continue with this policy in the future. However, we have moved to the new northwestjournal.ca domain and pages that are new since Jan. 15 will not automatically forward you to the new site. If you are linking to a page and wish to be notified in advance of any changes to the link, please e-mail specifying the link. We will do our best to let you know if that specific link is going to change.

Q: Will all the articles shown in the index be posted to the website?

A: Probably not, due to cost considerations. If you wish to request that a specific article be posted, or that a particular article never be removed, please e-mail  Northwest Journal stating your request and the reason.

Q: Why aren't there more pictures of the authors in period costume doing things at historic sites?

A: Several problems. First, cameras didn't exist and so they don't form part of a historic costume, and besides, we are usually too darn busy to take pictures anyway. Secondly, what pictures we have were usually taken by somebody else, and we don't own the copyright! Thirdly, such pictures usually include other people for which we don't have model releases... It's as frustrating for us as it is for you! We'll see if we can do better in the future.
